What does English level A1 mean?

A1 is the first level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). At A1 you understand familiar, everyday expressions and very simple sentences. You can introduce yourself and others, ask for directions, answer basic questions about where you live and work, and follow English that is spoken slowly and clearly.

This A1 placement test is for beginners and returners who want to check whether their foundations are solid. The test has 20 questions covering grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure. It is free, requires no registration, and you see your result immediately after the last question.

After the test you will know exactly where you stand — and what comes next: Simmonds Language Services has offered Business English courses with native-speaking trainers since 2004, online and in person in Hannover and Berlin.
